Glen Wallis, 38, pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Monday to assault charges over the incident that left the victim with a bruised eye, cut lip and damaged teeth.
The court heard Wallis walked up to the victim at 3am on February 5, and said “remember me?”
Wallis was agitated after claiming the victim had earlier made a slur against his mother.
Wallis headbutted the man and punched him in the mouth. The victim fell to the ground and did not retaliate, while Wallis fled the scene.
The victim was hospitalised with extensive facial injuries. A victim impact statement was tendered to the court.
Wallis was arrested on March 23 and made no admissions to police.
The court heard Wallis has “very significant mental health issues”.
Magistrate Patrick Southey convicted Wallis and placed him on an 18-month community corrections order.
