The $630 million hospital, the largest in regional Victoria, was designed and built by the the Exemplar Health consortium, which comprises four separate companies.
The project has been shortlisted in the large business category, alongside the Grand Hyatt Melbourne – the first five-star hotel in Victoria to install a closed loop organics unit, removing food waste from the general waste stream.
The hospital can generate its owner power, meaning it can continue to operate during blackouts.
Sustainable features of the new hospital include;
- A cogeneration and tri-generation system to provide instant electricity, cooling and heating
- 770 panel, 200kW roof mounted solar panels
- Rain water harvesting from 95 per cent of the roof area
- Recycled water systems as primary water supply to landscape irrigation, toilet flushing and heat rejection systems
- Approx 1000m2 of green roof with nearly 30 species of grass and shrubs, to provide views and habitats, creating a tranquil and natural environment
Sustainability Victoria said the pragmatic and cost-effective initiatives, resilient infrastructure, and significant energy efficiency were highlights of the hospital.
The winner will be announced on October 26 at the Plaza Ballroom, Melbourne.
More to come.
