CCB’s Year 8 girls team took out the honour earlier this week at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne.
The team qualified for the tournament finals after going through its seven preliminary round matches undefeated on August 21.
Finals day included seven pool matches, with the top two teams in each pool to qualify for the semi-finals.
CCB went through its pool games undefeated with seven victories, outscoring its opposition a combined 79-26:
defeated St Joseph’s College Echuca 10-1;
defeated St Francis Xavier College 9-4;
defeated Clonard College 16-3;
defeated Ballarat Grammar 18-2;
defeated Williamstown High School 11-9;
defeated Ruyton Girls School 8-4;
defeated Christian College Geelong 7-3.
Playing Rowville in their semi-final, CCB won a hard-fought encounter 9-6 to book its spot in the grand final.
Taking on Werribee’s Mackillop College in the final, CCB again played a top game to prevail 11-4, meaning it ended the carnival with a perfect 16-0 record, including the lead-up preliminary round matches.
The tournament, run by Netball Victoria, began with more than 400 entries.
The victorious team was co-coached by Julie Fennell and Sharna Frawley.
“From a competition that started with over 400 teams in their division, to finish number one is an amazing result,” CCB sports co-ordinator Maree Pearce said.
The same Year 8 girls netball team, as well as CCB’s senior girls netball team, have also qualified for the School Sport Victoria State Netball finals to be played at Waverley’s Jells Park.
The senior team plays this Friday, while the Year 8 side will be in action on Monday.
Winning team – Ellie Donnellon, Deanna Duane, Piper Dunlop, Carissa Brook, Tahlee O’Keefe, Amelia Moon-Manning, Meg McCarthy, Abbey Clohesy, Tiahna Leader. Coaches – Julie Fennell and Sharna Frawley.
