Lamb numbers remained similar, although when analysed there are more new season lambs coming forward against declining supplies of old season lambs.
Quality across the young lambs remained very good, and included this week was a large run of more than 1000 unshorn Merinos from the north. All the usual buyers attended, although some only operated at a reduced capacity after prices firmed again.
The best drafts of trade weight lambs improved by $2 to $5/head, while the heavier young lambs were similar to a week ago with more weight on offer. Young lambs sold to a top of $186 and it was one of four sales above $180/head for export weights estimated at 27kg and better.
The main runs of trade weights sold from $139 to $172/head, with the major domestic buyers often pushing into heavier weights. On a carcass basis, the heaviest young lambs were working out at around 620c, with rates improving to an estimated average of 650c/kg for the good trade weight pens. The market did strengthen late in the sale and there were some sales of neat domestic lambs above 680c/kg.
Most of the light weight young lambs sold from $105 to $118/head, with agents from Horsham and the north-east securing some lots.
A large line of young Merino lambs, showing a lot of burr and seed in the skins, sold to a top of $115/head which was estimated at just over 600c/kg c/wt. Old season lambs topped the market at $200/head for a small pen of extra heavy weights. There were a few sales above $180/head for heavy old lambs, but they were mainly in small lots of a few head. Price trends were dearer for the better finished and presented old season lambs.
Sheep: 5026. Change: 1726
Sheep numbers increased, boosted by larger lines of recently shorn Merino ewes and wethers. Prices rebounded by $5 to $15/head to recover most of the previous week's losses. The main runs of good trade weight Merinos sold from $90 to $120/head, as rates tracked above 400c/kg c/wt. Extra heavy crossbred ewes sold to $148/head.
