But curious Bendigonians will this week have a chance to tour such a facility, part of a week-long program of events designed to demystify death.
Dying to Know Week is an initiative of Remembrance Parks Central Victoria that spokeswoman Joanne Trickey hoped would make people more comfortable to talk about the morbid topic.
“Grief is very complex, and we all feel it because we all love people,” Ms Trickey said.
“But talking about it, normalises it.
“We have a birth plan, why not a death plan?”

The public are invited to an expo of leaders from the funeral and counselling sectors at RPCV’s Eaglehawk site on Tuesday, where they will be able to see behind the scenes of the crematorium as well as check out some unusual display coffins.
The program will also see Bendigo host its first “death cafe”.
The pop-up cafe movement offers a comfortable space to discuss death with others inclined to do so.
Since the first event of its kind in 2011, more than 4500 death cafes have been held in 50 different countries.
Death discourse got underway on the weekend with a tour of the Bendigo remembrance park that focussed on the ways people from different cultures chose to be buried.
Another tour will take place on Wednesday.

The business of dying was a diversifying one, Ms Trickey said, with some people determined to “put the fun back in funerals”.
Others opt for living funerals, celebrating their lives before death could claim them.
There was only one thing that was certain about death, Ms Trickey said.
“It’s inevitable.”
The program also includes a screening of documentary A Will in the Woods.
The film follows the experiences of a man dying from lymphoma as he investigates the most environmentally friendly form of burial available.
