V/Line said a Metro signal fault caused delays to all lines, particularly the Seymour and Bendigo lines, shortly after 5pm.
The fault was quickly rectified and services resumed but the Bendigo line continued to experience major disruptions.
“The Metro signal fault at Southern Cross has now been rectified. Services will resume with delays whilst we recover the network. Apologies,” the rail operator tweeted.
