Quilliam’s exhibition is titled “Distorted Reality of an Invasive Species” and features photographic imagery that invades the experience of distorting the human form.

The work looks at visual narratives of being born of the earth, walking the earth and returning to the earth.

Embedded with nature’s fibres and textures the exhibition aims to challenge human existence and the perception of creation.

The narratives and themes reflect a a contemporary view of ancient beliefs cultivated by Aboriginal culture.

Quilliam is an adjunct professor and one of Australia’s preeminent Aboriginal Photographic artists working on the international stage.

Over a 25-year career, he has created and curated more than 150 exhibitions all over the world including Austria, England, Mexico, Italy, Russia, Japan, France and the US.

Quilliam has previously won the NAIDOC Indigenous Artist of the Year award, the Human Rights Media Award (2008) for his work on the “Apology” and a Walkley Award for his social documentary on the Redfern riots.

Arnold Street Gallery director Susan McMinn said it was exciting to share Qulliam’s work with Bendigo.

“As Bendigo’s independent contemporary commercial gallery, we are elated and privileged to showcase the work by Aboriginal artist Wayne Quilliam,” she said.

“(We are excited) to share with the local community his creative journey and exploration of the culture of his people.”

The Arnold Street Gallery was established by McMinn in 2016.

It took the pair a year to develop the space before it open last July in an old North Bendigo milk bar at 189 Arnold Street.

“We wanted a studio space and a gallery side of it. Both of us are continuing to develop our art practice and teaching as well,” McMinn said at the time. 

Wayne Quilliam’s exhibition “Distorted Reality of an Invasive Species” is on at the Arnold Street Gallery from May 30 to July 17.
