In what’s understood to be a first in the carnival’s history, which dates back to 1934, two female umpires will take charge of a division one game when McCabe and Wardlaw officiate the day three clash between Goulburn Murray and Northern Districts at Golden Square.
Both are relatively new to the umpiring caper.
Last season McCabe became the first female to officiate a senior game in the Bendigo District Cricket Association when she umpired in a second XI match between Strathdale-Maristians and Kangaroo Flat.
Wardlaw – who previously played three Tests and seven One-day Internationals for England’s women’s team – joined Bendigo’s umpiring panel this season.
Meanwhile, the division two final that will be played next Friday at Weeroona Oval has had two brothers appointed to officiate – Robert and Chris Gill.
