UPDATE 8am, THURSDAY: The investigation into a Long Gully fatal house fire on Sunday night remains ongoing, a police spokesperson said.
UPDATE 11.45am: Police are urging anyone who might have information on the fatal house fire at Long Gully at the weekend to come forward.
A 45-year-old Sailors Gully man suffered severe burns in the suspicious fire and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, but later died.
A woman and two children were also at the home at the time of the fire, but were uninjured.
Homicide squad detectives have formally taken over the investigation.

A man passed away in hospital after suffering severe burns in the fire and police believe it was deliberately lit.
Homicide detectives are now in Bendigo as they undertake their investigation.
EARLIER: A MAN who sustained severe burns in a fire at a Long Gully home on Sunday night has died.
The man, understood to have been 45 years old, suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, where he died on Monday night.
The fire occurred on the back verandah of a Derwent Drive home.
Police believe the fire was deliberately lit and are continuing to investigate the incident.
