National Tidy Towns judge Dick Olesinski visited Wycheproof this week.
Mr Olesinski said he would now compare the town with six other national finalists.
“Wycheproof encourages knowledge and ideas-sharing with other communities, and believes in collaboration for the betterment of the region,” he said.
The town of 700 people has already been named Victoria’s 2012 Tidy Towns winner.
Wycheproof Post Office licensee Kylie Brown said the town was excited at the prospect of being named the tidiest in the country.
“People are really proud, everyone’s been chuffed,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s a little bit daunting as well. I think a few people are a bit apprehensive with the visit.”
Acting National Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful Peter McLean praised Wycheproof programs such as its $1 Rent-a-Farmhouse, Water Re-use Plan, Wycheproof Ram Tram and the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.
He said the town boasted the equal highest level of adult volunteering in Victoria and locals had actively sought opportunities to improve town facilities and promote their way of life.
The National Tidy Towns awards received 1180 initiatives from more than 300 entrants across councils, shires, community groups, schools and individuals.
The National Tidy Towns award winners will be announced in April or May next year.
