Catholic College Bendigo’s music students showcased their talents at the school’s musician of the year award at the Marian on Friday night.

It is the 17th time Catholic College Bendigo has held its musician of the year award which recognises and encourages the hard work and dedication young musicians put into developing their skills.
Seventeen students sang and played pianos, guitars, saxophones and a whole range of other instruments as part of the awards that also featured more than $700 in prizes.
Hours of hard work through the year saw students constantly practising, rehearsing and memorising songs for their musical night of nights.
Year 10 guitarist Harrison Jenner taking out first place with his performance of Still Awake by Tobias Rauscher.
Katie McMillan (Year 11) was awarded second place after singing Burn from new musical Hamilton while Jessica McCarthy (also Year 11) finished third after singing Up To The Mountain by Patty Griffin.
Year 8 student Will Edwards received the audience’s choice award with his rendition of Redgum’s folk song I Was Only Nineteen.
Organiser Karen Lichnovsky said students had created their own musical interpretations and developed their skills to meet the technical demands and challenges of the works.
“There were numerous wonderful performances on Friday night and the adjudicators were put to the test in choosing prize winners,” she said.
“It was such a fantastic line up of talented young musicians.”
Music is varied through the night with both classical and contemporary styles perform.
Performances included the more diverse as Quiet from Tim Minchin’s musical Matilda while songs written by Sondheim and Beethoven also featured.
Two students performed their own original compositions.
Local musicians and teachers David Martin and David Turpie adjudicated the evening while Cheryl Long, Tim Chan and Catherine Moore accompanied the students during the showcase.

The musician of the year award followed Catholic College Bendigo’s production of Grease which included more than 130 students in cast and crew roles.
