Chris Hamilton finished second in the men’s event, less than two minutes behind winner Adrian Jackson.
A well-known elite rider, Jackson was pushed hard all race by the Bendigo rider.
Hamilton’s Bendigo Senior Secondary College schoolmates Tasman Nankervis and Jason Lowndes were next across the finish line in third and fourth, respectively.
Nankervis’ time of 2:44.37 was little more than six minutes behind Hamilton, while Lowndes was just 38 seconds off a podium position.
The 17-year-olds braved cold and wet conditions to excel in the two laps of the rugged course in the You Yangs National Park.
Almost 100 men competed in the 66km event, which was hosted by the Geelong Mountain Bike Club, and 15 riders failed to finish in the tricky conditions.
Hamilton and Nankervis have excelled at recent races and teamed-up to win the men’s pairs category in the Bendigo six-hour race held at Sedgwick last month.
The youngest competitors, Hamilton and Nankervis defeated 30 other teams to win the gruelling race.
Nankervis also won another six-hour challenge in the Castlemaine State Forest last month after teaming with his 19-year-old brother Russell.
