The man was dragged under the car and run over shortly after 2pm on Alma Street.
Witnesses said the man had been helping a stranger with car trouble, when the car suddenly started.
A rural ambulance spokesman said the man suffered serious head and internal injuries. He has been airlifted to the Alfred hospital.
Senior Constable Brian Smith said the man was being a Good Samaritan trying to start the Jeep Cherokee 4wd when the incident happened.
"It reversed suddenly," he said. "He couldn't get it started so he put his foot on the accelerator and was stuck under the front right wheel. It dragged him along about 15m over the road."
Senior Constable Smith said the man was pinned under the tyre when paramedics arrived. He said police were investigating whether the car was put in reverse by accident or whether the car was faulty.
