The Magpies’ 46-40 win kept them in fourth-place, one game clear of sixth-placed Strathfieldsaye and one-and-a-half games clear of seventh-placed Kyneton.
Little separated the Magpies and Storm all day on Saturday, but the home team’s ability to force turnovers at crucial times proved to be decisive.
Midcourt players Alicia Cassidy and Laura Hopkins did a great job of feeding Maryborough goal shooter Jordan MacIlwain and goal attack Laura Hurse.
MacIlwain scored 35 goals and Hurse 11 goals in the impressive win.
Young gun Annie Spear led Strathfieldsaye’s scoring, with 24 goals, while Claire Gibbs added 16 goals.
Kyneton held top team Kangaroo Flat to a 40-40 draw.
The Tigers looked set to cause the upset of the season when they led by six goals at the final break.
However, the Roos stormed home to tie the scores in the dying seconds.
Kyneton was superbly led by Michelle Fletcher, with the goal attack scoring 29 goals. Hayley Page scored 11 goals.
The three quarter-time move of Ruby Barkmeyer to goal attack sparked Kangaroo Flat.
The teenager scored 11 goals in the final quarter. Elise O’Callaghan (15 goals) and Jamie Lee Clohesy (14 goals) were the other Kangaroo Flat players to score.
Sandhurst thumped Castlemaine 66-17 at Camp Reserve.
Dragons’ star Annie Cobbledick played two quarters at goal attack and one quarter at goal shooter and scored 30 goals.
Kelsey Sartori chipped in with 19 goals and Gemma Cusack enjoyed one half in goals and scored 17 goals.
In the remaining game of the round, Golden Square outclassed South Bendigo 64-39.
The Bulldogs remain in third place ahead of next Saturday’s big game against second-placed Sandhurst at the QEO.
