The female driver was killed instantly after she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a tree while travelling north on Creswick-Newstead Road about 7.30pm.
A police spokesman said the Holden Commodore left the road on a stretch notorious for hazards.
“(She) has been driving her car by herself and come around a slide corner, a known road for kangaroos and different dangers,” he said.
“She has unfortunately left the road and struck a tree.”
The spokesman said investigators believe that the woman was travelling to Newstead at the time of the crash.
Local CFA and SES crews worked for up to two hours to retrieve the car, which is believed to have been leaking gas.
The spokesman said the scene was emotional for responding officers and emergency services, many of whom knew the victim.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
