Aaron Carr, 25, is facing more than 50 charges for alleged crimes committed throughout central Victoria, including allegedly stealing timber from a building site next door to his former Eaglehawk house to build a rabbit hutch.

He applied for bail in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Monday, but was unsuccessful.

Carr has been charged with the theft of two motorbikes, a four-wheel motorbike and a trailer – valued at $30,000 – from properties in Halls Gap and Landsborough.

Detective Senior Constable Ben McCauley told the court Carr had missed bail once, had allegedly fled police at 160 km/h in Maryborough and attempted to flee his house during his arrest on May 22.

The court heard Carr allegedly stole petrol from outlets in Maryborough, Castlemaine, Bendigo and Ararat using his dual cab ute with false number plates.

The total value of the thefts was $804.62. On one occasion, an attendant at United petrol Maryborough recognised Carr and confronted him, taking a photo of his car.

Carr was present when police raided a Landsborough property on March 8, finding a number of stolen goods.

Police then raided Carr’s Maryborough residence, uncovering the allegedly stolen motorbikes and trailers.

Carr admitted to the thefts during a police interview, and said he cut the padlock of a Lendlease property to steal the trailer.

He was also charged with stealing $800 worth of timber from a building site next door to his former Eaglehawk house in August.

Carr represented himself in court, and said he was eager to put the offending behind him.

“The only way I’m going to get help is if I face up to what’s happened,” he said.

The court heard Carr had developed an ice habit, which he had attempted to address. Carr said his offending was not related to his ice use, but Magistrate Bruce Cottrell disagreed.

Mr Cottrell said Carr would remain in custody until he received treatment for his ice addiction.

“The nature of the offending demonstrates egregious dishonesty – entering private property to steal goods, the main purpose of which was to obtain money,” he said.

Carr was remanded in custody to appear in the Maryborough Magistrates’ Court on July 7.
