Forgoing the tradition of adjourning the budget debate immediately after the government’s address, Mr O’Brien instead launched a fiery reply to treasurer Tim Pallas’ 2016-17 financial plan, accusing the budget of failing to grow the economy, create jobs or reduce living expenses for Victorian households.
Taking issue with the government’s amendments to land tax and stamp duty, Mr O’Brien compared his political opponent to children’s book character Augustus Gloop, renowned for his overeating.
“Greedy, gluttonous and – I’m afraid to say - it ends very badly,” he said.
He also reminded Premier Daniel Andrews of his election eve promise not to increase taxes, comparing the move to Julia Gillard’s infamous “no carbon tax” gaff.
