Bendigo Orchid Club to host show

FLOWERS are in full bloom this October as the Bendigo Orchid Club prepares for its annual Spring Show this weekend.

Australian native and exotic orchids will be on display and organisers are expecting more than 800 people to attend the three-day festival.

Bendigo Orchid Club secretary Mick Corboy said this year marked the 30th anniversary of the club.

He said the group had already celebrated the milestone earlier in the year but was expecting the event to be one of the biggest yet.

“There will be growers from Swan Hill, Maryborough, Heathcote and Shepparton all taking part,” Mr Corboy said.

“We will have plenty of orchids for sale with potting demonstrations and expert tips on how to grow orchids.”

Mr Corboy said since he had been a part of the club the annual Spring Show continued to get bigger, this year attracting 18 different stall holders.

“The flowers used to be displayed on trestle tables but now it is much bigger, with individual stalls,” he said.  “What has changed is the amount of different types of orchids that people are growing,” he said.

Mr Corboy said the best thing about orchids was their longevity.

“You can cut them off and put them in a vase and they will be there for three months.

“You cut a rose and it would last a week,” he said.

The Spring Show will be held at the Kangaroo Flat YMCA Leisure Centre today  between 1pm and 5pm, Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
