The man was driving a dark green Mitsubishi sedan when he smashed into the back of another Mitsubishi sedan near the Nolan Street, Hargreaves Street intersection about 12.45pm.
Acting Senior Sergeant Rosie Rowe said the prang caused a reasonable extent of damage.
There were no reported injuries but two children in the back of the other car were shaken by the incident.
Witnesses called triple-0 about the hit-and-run but Acting Senior Sergeant Rowe said no-one was there to offer further information when police arrived.
"A lot of witnesses assisted, and one of the drivers took off after the offending vehicle," she said.
"The male driver made no attempt to stop. We need to exactly what's happened. Anyone with information can contact Bendigo police."
The man was last seen heading along Charleston Road in the direction of Lansell Street, Bendigo East.
