Stewart, from Kyneton, was outplayed by Queensland’s Natasha Jones 21 shots to two in the girls’ singles, leaving the Victorian in sixth place ahead of the final day of competition at the Launceston Bowls Club.
Equal on points with the third-placed competitor after a first day win, Stewart is 32 shots behind after yesterday’s heavy loss.
Stewart is a good chance of recovering some shots tomorrow, though, when she takes on the last-placed bowler from Tasmania, who has scored just four shots and conceded 42.
Earlier, Stewart and pairs partner Tayla Morison from Melbourne were more than competitive, but couldn’t match Queensland’s pair – featuring Jones – in their doubles match.
The Victorians were defeated 20-15, their second loss, which has left them in sixth place before today’s last round against the seventh-placed Tasmanian duo.
After an opening day triumph for the Victorian boys’ fours on Monday, Bendigo East’s Bradley Marron and his team-mates went down 15-13 in a thriller to Queensland yesterday.
The loss relegated the Vics to fifth place, a win and 27 shots behind the leading ACT outfit, but Marron and his team can leapfrog at least Tasmania in fourth spot with a victory against the home side today.
Marron, Mathew O’Brien and Cain Hanley had a morale-boosting 24-15 victory against Queensland, the Victorian boys’ triples team’s first after an opening day loss and one of just two wins for any Victorian team yesterday.
A thumping win against second-bottom team Tasmania today, plus other results going their way, could see the Victorian triples claim a top-three spot.
