“We were driving back from the Horsham Field Days and I said to the boys, “We can do this in Elmore”. So we did!”
The former president of the Victorian Farmers Federation and the Wheat and Woolgrowers Association said the first organising committee had no idea how big the event would grow from those humble beginnings.
The first field days in 1964 had 70 sites in a non-permanent site near the Campaspe River.
There are 700 exhibitors on show this year at the $2.5 million Elmore Events Centre.
“It was hard to visualise in the first year what it would be like now,” he said.
“It can’t grow much more – we’d run out of room!”
Mr Holmberg is looking forward to the event’s 50th anniversary celebrations next year.
He is very proud of what he started and still thinks the Elmore Field Days is the best agricultural field days around.
“Every field day is different (but) we reckon ours is the best,” he said.
