A City of Greater Bendigo committee will work out the details of the project, which has been confirmed as going ahead.
The much-discussed project – which was promised, then scrapped, then put back on the agenda – was welcomed by Bendigo Downtown Traders Association president Ross White.
“It will encourage families to come back into the mall,” he said.
“We’ve been pushing for this and it will be a positive thing.
“It’s definitely something that’s been missing in the mall.”
While Mr White believes a playground will bring people to the area, he said it was only part of the solution. “It needs a lot of different factors to fix the place,” he said.
“We’ve been working with the council and we’re getting more community events there... the council’s been very supporting. We’re trying to get more people coming down to see what a good place it is.”
Mr White said he believed the association would be invited to Friday’s discussions.
A total of $150,000 was allocated to the project in the council’s budget.?
