This season the holiday workshops are inspired by the current exhibition Ink Remix: Contemporary art from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The workshops will be staged from January 12 to 15. Listed are some of the activities that will be held at the gallery this summer.
Year of the Monkey
It’s nearly Chinese New Year so to start this workshop we will view our current exhibition Ink Remixed then sketch our resident gallery monkey, before creating a unique monkey mask using cardboard, tissue papers, pens and other fun materials. At the end children will put on their masks and have a monkey parade through the gallery.
Chinese Scrolls
The scroll plays a significant role in Chinese culture and artists both past and present have used its unique format for their art. This workshop will begin with participants viewing some contemporary Chinese artists’ scroll works. Then participants will have the opportunity to make and design their own artistic scroll using bamboo, paper and a selection of pens and pencils. Participants will then try their hand at writing Chinese characters and incorporating these into their scroll designs
Word Art
In the current exhibition Ink Remix many of the artists incorporate and play visually with traditional Chinese characters and writings. After viewing the exhibition the children will have the chance to design and create their own artworks using text and a wide assortment of art materials. The emphasis will be on experimenting with size, shape, strength and placement of text. They’ll also be encouraged to incorporate colour and found materials with the text to add texture and a sense of play to their artworks.
