GOLDEN Square superboot Grant Weeks says he’ll cherish his new Bendigo Football League goalkicking record when his career ends, but for the meantime, all he’s worried about is celebrating Saturday’s premiership.

For 79 years, the 163 goals Eaglehawk’s Frank Crapper kicked in 1933 stood as the  Bendigo Football League’s goalkicking summit.

But with his four goals in Saturday’s unforgettable three-point grand final win over Gisborne, Weeks set a new record for the most goals in a BFL season with 164.

Weeks equalled Crapper’s record 17 minutes into the third quarter when he marked a Travis Baird pass and converted his set-shot from 40m out.

The 24-year-old then eclipsed the long-standing record 39 seconds into the last quarter when he received a handball from team-mate Mark Lloyd and nailed a shot on his left foot to kick his 164th of the season.

Not only has Weeks broken Crapper’s record, but has done so having played two less games than what Crapper had in 1933.

“It’s probably something I’ll look back on when I finish my footy and cherish a bit more then, but for now, I’m just glad to play in a premiership... to play in this Golden Square team is something special,” Weeks said.

“A lot of people wrote us off halfway through the year and said we couldn’t get anywhere near winning it again.

“But we knew we could do it again. It was just about getting the blokes back out on the park, and today we only had Chris Malone out of our best team.

“We worked hard over the year and we’ve got over the line today.”

Weeks’ 164 goals this year came on the back of kicking 157 and 130 in his first two seasons at Golden Square.

This year his conversion has been much better than it had the previous two seasons.

“I’ve done a lot more practice at training this year and worked on my routine,” Weeks said.

“My first year here I probably kicked 100 points, but as you get older you learn a few techniques and get better.”
