The 28-year-old has volunteered her Thursday mornings for the past year to help serve students a healthy breakfast for the Bendigo YMCA Community Breakfast Program.
“I do have a lot of free time on my hands with basketball and someone from the YMCA mentioned the program to me and thought, ‘why not?’,” Aubry said. “I just came to see what it was like and never left.
“It is about giving back to the community and people giving up their time to help others.”
Aubry, who is Canadian, represented her country at the London Olympics this year.
She said going to the Olympics was a dream come true.
“The Olympics were magnificent, I have dreamt about it for so long and then I finally got there,” she said.
“It was worth the wait of 10 years trying to get there.”
YMCA board member Michael McKern also volunteers with the breakfast program and said that since it began 12 months ago, they had served 20,000 breakfasts.
He said he hoped to improve students’ healthy eating options, with plans to create a Fresh Food Friday initiative next year.
The breakfast program also runs at Maiden Gully Primary School and Eaglehawk North Primary School, Mr McKern said.?
