The new commission, to be established following the recent Review into Country Football, will be made up of eight to 12 members and will incorporate the Bendigo, Loddon Valley, Heathcote District, North Central and Bendigo Junior football leagues, as well as the Bendigo Gold and Bendigo Umpires Association.
Three commissioners have already been appointed by AFL Victoria – Nick Carter, Leon Holt and Brett Fitzpatrick – with the remaining positions to be determined a working group led by Carter and Holt.
All commissioners must be independent and cannot hold a current governance position within the region with any other local football league, club or umpiring body.
“The process undertaken so far by the working group has been extremely positive, and all VCFL affiliates in the area have agreed in principle to the strategic intent of the recommendations,” Carter said.
“Since March a working group made up of representatives from all locally-based VCFL affiliates have met on a monthly basis to discuss updates, key issues of the review, and to start building the foundations for the proposed new structure.”
The development of the new commission will be the first step in the process of setting up the governance structure that will oversee and guide the implementation of further review recommendations.
“We’re working through a structured process for the recruitment of commissioners, which will see working group members engage their clubs, leagues and associations to put forth nominations for possible commissioners,” Carter said.
“A very diligent process will be followed on behalf of affiliated bodies and the football community, and the best possible people will be appointed to the Central Victorian Commission.”
Expressions of interest for positions on the commission will close on September 28, with appointments expected to be finalised by mid-October.
Once commissioner appointments are confirmed, leagues, clubs and umpiring associations will be asked to affiliate with the Central Victoria Commission, as well as the VCFL.
As well as the commissioners, a key appointment will also be that of a regional general manager, who will be charged with the delivery of a localised football strategy.
The general manager will be announced once the commission is established.
“The overall strategic intent is to put in place a governing body to ensure football in the region prospers, but in time, also develop a football administration structure taking into account existing structures already in place that can provide outstanding support to leagues, clubs and umpiring groups,” Carter said.
