Bendigo TAFE staff to join Melbourne rally

Teachers from Bendigo TAFE will go on strike for 24 hours tomorrow to protest budget cuts that will shed staff and close campuses in central Victoria.

The Australian Education Union have called on all TAFE members across Victoria to stop work and join the rally in Melbourne's Treasury Gardens.

AEU Victorian branch president Mary Bluett said regional institutions would be among the hardest hit by the cuts to the sector and needed to have their voices heard.

It follows a document leaked to the media last week that showed TAFE institutes were preparing for widespread fee increases and potential mergers between schools.

The report details plans to close Bendigo TAFE's Castlemaine campus.

Ms Bluett said a delegation of staff from Bendigo TAFE would travel down to tomorrow's strike.

Bendigo TAFE chief executive officer Maria Simpson said she appreciated staff members' opportunity to express their concern.

"My role is to ensure we continue to meet our commitments to all our students and classes continue wherever possible and that Bendigo TAFE remains viable and valued over the long term," she said.

"I continue to work with all our staff to achieve this outcome."
