MARYBOROUGH Highland Society president John Inglis has announced he will retire, but the board says it won’t change its position on building a sports club in Castlemaine’s old railway goods shed.

The club is currently involved in a stoush at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal over permits to install 65 new poker machines at the rail shed venue.
Mr Inglis said he would not continue as president but would remain on the board after the society’s annual general meeting on Friday.
Maryborough Highland Society manager Malcolm Blandthorn said the board was confident with resuming the challenge in VCAT.
He said the president’s term was dictated by a three- year maximum tenure.
“(Mr Inglis) will stay on the board and will still attend the VCAT hearing,” Mr Blandthorn said.
“We’re happy with how it’s progressing.”
Opposing the poker machine developments are the Mount Alexander Shire Council and lobby group Enough Pokies in Castlemaine.
The VCAT hearing has been adjourned until December.
