The team qualified for last week’s state grand final day in Waverley with some dominant performances at regional events.
After winning every match at the Loddon Mallee zone finals and at the next stage in Shepparton, the Golden Square students knocked off three other sides at Waverley to make the grand final.
Up against Croydon, Golden Square lost by 10 goals, but it wasn’t exactly a fair contest.
Croydon – a multiple winner of the tournament in recent years – was the only side to field an all boys team from 1200 participating schools, according to Barkmeyer.
“Every team put in a mixed team except them – we were gobsmacked,” Barkmeyer said.
“Height was the only thing that held us back, we were faster and more skilful, but they had more height. They just kept playing the lob over the top and there wasn’t much we could do.
“(Our) team was fantastic. I still think we’re the best mixed team in Victoria. We had a very talented bunch.”
