Romsey club hit by double robbery

Romsey Bowls Club members have been left reeling after their clubrooms were robbed twice in two days.

Thieves broke into the clubrooms last Thursday and Friday, stealing almost $1000 of alcohol.

In the second theft late Friday night, offenders broke in through a skylight. They left with 20 slabs of beer they wheeled out the front door in wheelie bins.

This followed an earlier break-in on Thursday night when alcohol was also stolen.

Leading Senior Constable Dean Madigan said club members were devastated by the robberies.

“They had functions on that weekend and all their alcohol was stolen. They were extremely disappointed,” he said.

Both break-ins were believed to have happened between midnight and 8am at the Park Lane Romsey Bowls Club rooms.

Romsey lawn bowler Conway Bovell said bowlers arrived Saturday morning to find the locks on the fridge doors smashed and the fridge empty.

He said the club had installed extra locks to screw the windows shut on Friday after the first robbery.

“It was a little bit surprising. They must have used a huge jimmy bar to smash the lock on the fridge,” he said.

“They managed to get in through the skylight, so they would have to have been pretty skinny to fit through it.”

Mr Bovell said the loss of almost the alcohol would impact the club’s business.

“You’re a small club, you really only make money from what you take over the bar,” he said.

“When you have that amount of alcohol stolen it’s never good.”

He said the club would look into installing a new security system and alarms.

The central Victorian crime desk has made a forensic examination of the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
