The Indian Bollywood Night was the main event on day four of the Festival of Cultures.

A group of Bendigo women, originally from northern India, performed the 'gidha' dance for the first time. 

Dancer Samreet Johal said there weren't many multicultural activities in Bendigo most of the time and she was excited to have the opportunity to perform. 

After the dancing, member of the Victorian Multi-Faith Council Arvind Shrivastava sang a mix of religious, folk and pop songs. 

Mr Shrivastava said he'd lived in Australia for almost 50 years and had seen the Indian community go from a few families to much larger communities. 

"Simple little things which we used to crave for when I came here, like spices and lentils and things like that, we couldn't buy them because there was not a market for that," he said.

"The cultural scene has also changed.

"There are lots of cultural groups, as well as schools and performances, and there are regularly Bollywood films being shown."

Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services chairperson Voltaire Nadurata Bendigo was one of the most caucasian areas of Victoria when he moved here about 13 years ago. 

"But things have changed, especially in the last five years I think," he said.

"There are some sad times but I think it's getting better." 

Festival of Cultures events tomorrow include Harmony Day at Hargreaves Mall from 11.30am to 2.30pm.

The day was planned to coincide with the United Nations day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
