A BALMY night at Junortoun made for ideal conditions for racegoers at the 2015 PETstock Bendigo Pacing Cup.
More than a thousand punters, families, onlookers and owners made their way to the restaurant and viewing area to take in the 10 race program throughout the evening.
There was also a race from the pony club for children, who took part in a handicapped trots event covering half-distance.
Sulky drivers Hayley Douglas, Georgia Vozlic and Stacie Carbone said the events were another way for them to get involved in the sport.
"My dad is a harness racing owner," Georgia said.
"It's scary the first or second time you race, but after that it's just a lot of fun."
While they enjoyed it for now, the three were unsure whether it was likely to be their calling in life.
"I really enjoy it now, but it's a whole lot of work after a while," Hayley said.
"It becomes like your full time job."
Family groups also took to the grassy hill at the beginning of the final straight to get up close to the harness racing action.
Jane Garrett, of Strathfieldsaye, said it was her family's first time at the trots.
"We've just been into Bendigo and thought we'd stop by here to check it out and see what it's like," she said.
Others were more regular racegoers, including Belinda Harley and her Axedale family.
"The kids can't wait until race week, they love it," she said.
"They're always desperate to come back."
The entrants might have been sparse, but those who took part in the Fashions on the Field had some colourful and creative pieces.
Bridget Cox made her entire outfit herself, including a striking white hat to match her pink top and white skirt.
Some eyes might have been focused off the track, but most were keen to watch the the action out on the circuit.
The Stevens family watched on eagerly as their part-owned horse took part in Race 1, placing in fifth.
Ron Stevens said they were pleased with the result.
"We were happy with the run, the favourite was much too good for us," he said.
"But look out for us next time, for sure."
