The Neangar Park Golf Club member will leave on January 24 to contest China's qualifying school for the first time.

Last year was one of the busiest, but also the most successful in his years as a professional golfer.

Mueck teed off in 14 tour events, played about 70 pro-am events, and had a stint in Papua New Guinea.

"Qualifying school in China is going to be a huge challenge," Mueck said on Friday at the Neangar Park course near Eaglehawk.

The 25-year-old said a goal was to build on the momentum from the late-year surge.

"Last year was the best I have had so far," Mueck said of what was his fifth year on the professional circuit.

Highlights included third place in the New South Wales PGA, and being near the top of the leaderboard in the Australian PGA.

Mueck's play earned the Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund award in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Advertiser Sports Star of the Year award in 2007-08.

He is a dual monthly winner in the awards which are celebrating their 50th year and are proudly backed by Prime 7.

Many years on from when he first swung a club at Edenhope-Apsley, Mueck said the game kept throwing up many challenges.

Consistency is what he and every golfer, whether they be at the Australian Masters or in a weekend round at Axedale, craves to achieve.

"Last year my play was a lot more consistent. It's a mix of maturing, learning, but also working on my game."

He and coach Adam Henwood, who is based in Byron Bay, have worked a lot on putting.

"It's been my Achilles Heel. It all comes down to it," he said of either achieving an eagle, birdie, par, bogey,or worse.

Although wayward drives or missed putts are frustrating, Mueck said "love of the game" was a big factor.

"There is a different challenge every day, no matter where you play or what tournament it is."
