Fire crews and police responded to a call out to the Lansell Square Shopping Centre car park about 12.30pm.
Bendigo Fire Brigade incident controller Craig Houlihan said the Ford F-truck's engine compartment caught on fire after it backfired.
He said the car was run on gas and that contributed to the fire.
He said the owner had the fire under control before fire crews arrived.
Fire crews helped to extinguish the fire and isolate the battery, he said.
