Jones says it's unlikely he'll coach a senior team again, but he has joined Ellinbank District Football League club Cora Lynn in a director of coaching role.
Cora Lynn is coached by Jones' good mate, Travis Marsham, who led the club to the premiership this year and also worked with Jones at the Gold in 2013.
"The official title is director of coaching, but it's fairly minor... it will be one day a week and game day," Jones said on Thursday.
"You never say never, but I'm probably done being a senior coach and this is just an opportunity to stay involved in footy without the full-time commitment every night."
In his role, Jones - who coached the Gold in their two stand-alone VFL seasons before folding in August this year - will also have an involvement in Cora Lynn's junior program.
"The role will involve making sure the junior development programs are all leading into what the senior club wants, and also working with the under-18s and the young players in the seniors, as well as helping out on match-day," Jones said.
While he has spent the past two years coaching the Bendigo Gold and also played 226 AFL games with St Kilda, Jones is no stranger to the grass roots, with his career including coaching Narre Warren to back-to-back flags in 2006-07 in the Casey Cardinia league.
The 38-year-old has also coached Beaconsfield in the Casey Cardinia league, as well as the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup.
Meanwhile, Jones is also an assistant coach for a VFL representative team that will play Ireland in an International Rules match at Sandringham this Sunday.
The VFL team includes Golden Square's Jack Geary - the only country player in the squad of 25.
"It has been a really enjoyable experience with the team and good to see Jack Geary get an opportunity," Jones said.
"Jack has adapted to the round ball OK and from what I've seen of him, he'll go well on Sunday."
