A YOUNG man had a lucky escape after he collided with a semi-trailer, on Monday afternoon.
This comes as the state government announces funds to make country roads safer.
The 18-year-old red p-plate driver, David Male, was driving north toward Loddon Vale when he crossed into oncoming traffic.
Red p-plate drivers are restricted on the amount of passengers and the vehicle's power during their 12 month probationary licence period.
Mr Male collided with the tri-axle of a semi-trailer travelling south toward Bendigo
Loddon Vale CFA captain Rowan Broad said the man was lucky to escape the head-on crash.
Mr Broad said the car had gone under the truck and hit the back tri-axle.
He said the accident had caused delays in traffic along the busy rural highway.
Mr Male's father, Chris Male, arrived to the scene shortly after his son was transferred to Bendigo Health.
He said he was relieved his son had survived the accident.
"I'm just glad he got out of it and he is alive," he said.
Truck driver Laurie Maxted said he was carrying a full load of grain at the time of the incident.
Due to the weight of the truck it took him about 100 metres to come to a complete stop.
"I was driving on my side of the road and he just veered over," he said.
Bendigo Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable David Hockey said there was extensive damage to the car.
He said police will investigate the incident further and that "fatigue may have been an issue."
"He will probably be charged with failing to keep left of centre," he said.
"The message here is, if you are feeling tired, pull over and rest."
The incident comes on the same day as the Napthine Government announced funds to improve the safety of country roads.
Police and emergency services minister Kim Wells said the Victoria Police Safer Country Roads Plan 2014-2018 aims to target vulnerable road users.
He said country road users were three times more likely to be killed and 40 per cent more likely to be seriously injured in a road accident.
"Speed, drugs, alcohol, fatigue, distraction, inexperience and driver error are often to blame," he said.
