'Lunatic' driver in custody

A DRIVER who allegedly reached 155km/h on Sandhurst Road and crossed Lockwood Road at Kangaroo Flat at more than 80km/h has been refused bail.

Madison Martin, 21, of Neilborough, allegedly engaged in three separate police pursuits in Bendigo between August 21 and 28, each terminated because of public safety concerns.

At 1.30pm on August 21, the court heard Martin allegedly evaded police in his maroon Ford by driving through a red light at the Holmes and Holdsworth roads intersection.

On August 27, Martin allegedly sped away from police along Thomas Street, Kangaroo Flat, before going through the Lockwood Road intersection at high speed.

Police allege Martin also reached 100km/h on the back streets of Spring Gully on August 28 before he was arrested on 18 charges the next day.

Three zip-lock bags of the drug ice were found at the property where he was arrested.

Leading Senior Constable Todd Deary told the Bendigo Magistrates Court Martin drove like a "lunatic" and it was a miracle no one was injured or killed.

The court heard he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and has been on medication.

Magistrate David Cottrill said Martin posed an "unacceptable risk" to the public and was highly likely to re-offend if released on bail.

Martin was remanded in custody to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates Court on September 25.
