Nine fire crews were called to the home at about 2.30am this morning, after it is believed a log rolled out of a fireplace. The house was fully involved on arrival. CFA spokeswoman Holly Little said a working smoke alarm had woken up the man, 50, and his son.
"They were able to escape safely but the house, which was an old miner's cottage, has been fully destroyed.
It took 40 firefighters about 50 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
Fire investigators will attend the scene today to determine the cause.
