Madison Abel, 15, from Eaglehawk and Meg Thurston, 16, from Maldon, are two of the eight Victorian finalists.
The two hopefuls were part of more than 700 girls who took part in the Melbourne search.
Madison said she didn't think she would get through.
"I just thought it was exciting and a good opportunity," she said.
"I've done a little bit of modelling (with Seed Teen) before and thought it was worth a try."
Madison said she liked models like Cara Delevingne and Miranda Kerr.
"They both stay true themselves even in and industry that tries to shape people a certain way,," she said.
"I don’t think (shaping people) is good but it's not worth taking too seriously, it's just a bit of fun."
Girlfriend magazine editor Sarah Tarca said the model search was in its 24th year.
In the past the competition has unearthed models including Samantha Harris and Ruby Rose
"One of the things we see year in, year out is how much (the model search) grows," Ms Tarca said.
"This year Melbourne had our biggest number (of hopefuls) yet. There was about 730.
"It was the biggest (group of hopefuls) of all time. Normally Sydney has the big numbers but Melbourne was almost double."
Ms Tarca said the finalists were normally narrowed down to six but the large field meant the number was changed to eight.
"We are there from 9am judging, interviewing and surveying the girls and taking note of the ones who stick out from the other 700," Ms Tarca said.
"For me I'm looking for someone who can represent the Girlfriend brand and embodies what our readers are about as well as a confident and healthy body image."
The state finalist will take part in a national finalists shoot on Monday, July 21 with the winner selected on Friday, July 25.
The over winner will be announced in the October issue of Girlfriend, which goes on sale on September 18.
