Sergeant Adam Woods said the incident occurred between 6.45pm and 9pm on Monday night.
"While the lady was at the Bendigo cinema, her car has been damaged with a key or something of that nature," Sergeant Woods said.
"All the panels and front bonnet have been keyed and it is quite deep.
"We estimate it is about $5000 worth of damage."
It is unknown whether the parties were known to each other.
Sergeant Woods asked any witnesses to come forward and contact Constable Andrew Steel at the Bendigo Police Station.
"It doesn't seem to be a spate - just a once off - and we are looking for any information that anyone can provide."
