RELATED: SES and Powercor on hand to help
THE SES has a strong message for residents: they are not a wood-chopping service.
SES Northwest Victoria regional manger John Parker said it was common for people to ask the SES to chop wood for them when they were on scene at an accident.
"It's not unusual for some of the community we attend that once we have made their property safe they ask us to cut trees up into firewood for them to use," he said.
"It's not something our members need to be doing, particularly with the large volumes of calls: they have to get from property to property to make things safe.
"We'll make the property safe, we'll clear the surrounding area but we certainly can't tie our crews up ... in chopping firewood."
Mr Parker's comments come after SES members from Bendigo and surrounds headed to Melbourne to help with efforts to remove fallen trees and other safety hazards after today's strong winds.
