Union disputes findings

A HAZELDENE'S employee and union member says Wednesday's Fair Work Commission hearing did not rule in Hazeldene's favour.

His assertion comes after the company's general manager, James Thompson, told the Bendigo Advertiser the commission found Hazeldene's had followed a fair employment process.

The worker, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the commission, "Really didn't rule in anyone's favour".

The National Union of Workers and Hazeldene's would meet with the commission again on Friday, the worker said, to help both parties reach an agreement.

The industrial dispute regards two issues.

The union alleges Hazeldene's has been replacing permanent, part-time jobs with casual, contracted positions.

The second issue regards a restructuring of the workforce, with Hazeldene's requring long-term employees to reapply for their jobs.

The Hazeldene's worker said the union wanted to be sure no worker would lose their job or be offered a position that would leave them "worse off" financially.

Hazeldene's brand manager Michelle Daniel said nobody would lose their job but some people would work fewer overtime hours.

"It's not our intention that anybody will lose their job and so far no one has," she said. 

"A lot of jobs will change because they won't have as much overtime as they used to. 

"Some of them are working ridiculous hours."

She said the casual workers were employed in a different section of the company to the employees challenging the company at the Fair Work Commission.

Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said she had met with Hazeldene's staff and their concerns were a reminder of why the Fair Work Commission was important.

"I will continue to speak to Hazeldene's and the workers ... to make sure we're creating jobs people can count on," she said.

"It's important we work with employers and employees to ensure we have safe and secure work."

Neither Hazeldene's nor the worker could provide the Bendigo Advertiser with documentation from Wednesday's meeting.
