A NATIONAL emergency services institute at Mount Macedon will close.
Tonight's budget revealed the Australian Emergency Management Institute, part of the Attorney-General's Department, would discontinue.
Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said the institute employed 60 people and its closure would save the government $900,000 over four years.
"My office received a phone call from a family member of one of the workers today," Ms Chesters said.
"It is a devastating blow to the Macedon Ranges and the people, and their families, who work there," she said.
"Their jobs will be the first of many government jobs that will be cut from our region."
Information on the Attorney-General's Department website says the institute provides a range of education, training, professional development, information, research and community awareness services to the nation and the region.
"The institute continues to focus on improving knowledge and development in the emergency management sector," it reads.
"It supports broader national security capability development efforts to build community resilience to disaster."
