Filming of Sucker will take place in Maldon, Castlemaine, Kyneton, Guildford and Malmsbury.
The movie is the brainchild of Melbourne comedian Lawrence Leung and debut feature director, Ben Chessell.
The production will see more than $4.7 million spent in Victoria and create 105 jobs, including 50 in regional areas.
Innovation Minister Louise Asher said the film would provide great opportunities for actors, set decorators, construction crews, riggers, grips, makeup and costume teams and camera operators to hone their skills.
Sucker is a film adaptation of the award winning stage play of the same name by Melbourne comedian, Lawrence Leung.
It tells the story of Lawrence, an 18 year old Chinese Australian, who fails to get into Medicine and is banished to stay with his uncle for the summer.
