Michell Dean and Adam Rooney, and their six children, lost all their possessions in a fire on Sunday night.
A CFA spokesman said initial investigations showed an electrical fault was the cause.
A DHS spokeswoman said the department had been called to the public housing property four times for electrical issues.
“At this point the department is awaiting a determination on the official cause of the fire from authorities,” she said.
"There have been four requests for electrical inspections or works during the family’s seven-year tenancy at the property.
“On three occasions fittings were replaced and a Certificate of Electrical Safety was obtained each time.”
The spokeswoman said the family requested a check on the home’s entire electrical installation in 2011 which found no issues.
The department has not been able to find a replacement home for the family, who are in temporary accommodation and has received emergency funding.
People continue to offer support to the family.
Musician Martin “Paddy” Dolan hopes to hold a fund-raising concert and is looking for artists to join him.
“The idea is in its infancy,” he said.
“But I have a reputation for doing things for people down on their luck.
“It’s only a drop in the ocean, but lots of drops in the ocean can be good.”
Despite receiving criticism on Facebook following a Bendigo Advertiser story, Ms Dean said the family had saved hard to buy their destroyed possessions and were not after handouts.
“We’re on Centrelink and live on government housing, but I pay full rent on our house,” she said.
"We’ve copped a lot of negative stuff from people saying we’ve rorted the system.
"But everything we’ve got, we’ve saved for.”
