After missing selection in last Friday’s NBA Draft, Dellavedova was chased by the Cavaliers, Orlando Magic and the New York Knicks for a berth on their Summer League rosters.
The Maryborough-raised point guard signed with the Cavs and will play in next week’s NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
“Matthew has signed a partially guaranteed contract,’’ Dellavedova’s father, Mark, said yesterday.
“What that means is that he’ll play for Cleveland in the Summer League and if he keeps ticking the boxes he’ll stay with Cleveland for their final try-outs in September.
“They could also cut him at any time. The positive is that Matthew has a chance to impress at Summer League.”
The Las Vegas Summer League features 22 NBA teams playing in a tournament format from July 12-22.
The Cavs open their tournament against the Los Angeles Lakers on July 12.
“This is a foot in the door for him,’’ Matthew’s mother Leanne said yesterday.
“Ultimately he wanted to stay in the United States and he’ll give this everything he’s got.”
New Cleveland coach Mike Brown has been to Moraga in San Francisco to watch Dellavedova train with his college team St Mary’s. The Cavs already have all-star point guard Kyrie Irving, but do lack depth in that position.
Dellavedova will head to Las Vegas early next week and train with the Cavs for three days leading into the Summer League.
