The grassroots concept has operated in European countries for more than 50 years and is the first of its kind in central Victoria.
The Loddon Mallee Preschool Association (LMPA) and Spring Gully Kindergarten have teamed up to deliver the pilot program.
Bendigo Bush Kinder teacher Jenny Prince said the idea arose when a mother, who has a background in environmental education, suggested the concept.
Ms Prince said the idea was quick to gain interest and after a visit to a bush kinder in Darebin Parklands, the decision was made to open one in Bendigo.
She said there are no toys, tools or art supplies, and children can only use what nature has provided them in all seasons.
“Our play grows from what the environment presents and we nurture their learning just as we would in a traditional setting,” she said.
“The true delight comes through watching the children actively participate in learning socially, emotionally and cognitively as their identities emerge into confident, able and capable members of our community of peers.”
LMPA chief executive Sandra Houlahan said the interest and support of the program had been overwhelming.
“The bush kinder program has generated much interest and discussion from parents and educators alike about how to become involved,” she said.
“Many families can see great benefit in reconnecting children with the environment.” Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell will officially launch the Bendigo Bush Kinder today.
