Reclaim the Curb is a competition aimed at empowering people to design and build useful things in public places.
School kitchen garden specialist Brian Hosking said a team of students worked in partnership with local residents to create the garden from scratch.
He said plans had already been made to transform the school’s nature strip and it was a natural progression to enter the competition.
“There is already a Stephanie Alexander garden at the school, so students are familiar with the process of gardening,” he said.
“They have used those skills, with the help of residents to turn the nature strip into a community garden. We have planted vegetables like bok choy, spinach and other lettuces.”
The school were joint winners with two other groups and will share in a cash prize of $2000, which will go towards the project. ?– MADDIE WINES
