The date marked the 150th anniversary of the creation of the municipal district of Eaglehawk in 1862.
Members of the Eaglehawk Heritage Society have worked long and hard over the past five months, not only planning the day’s activities but also researching, compiling and printing an 88-page history of the 150 years of local government at Eaglehawk.
It is nigh on impossible to produce a work such as this in a few short months, but working as a team the society did just that and can be justifiably proud of the finished result.
The City of Greater Bendigo generously provided funds for the community celebration and made staff available to help with planning, and this was greatly appreciated, especially the efforts of Ms Andie Downing from the civic events department.
The day dawned with a frost on the ground and I’m sure many of your readers spent a few minutes more enjoying a Sunday morning sleep-in, unlike the volunteers who joined members of the society at the Town Hall at 8am to help move couches and chairs to set up for the event.
This willing band of helpers worked tirelessly to transform the Star Theatre into a venue to seat 250 guests and band members.
The 25-member Eaglehawk Citizens Brass band donated its services to entertain the audience as did the MC, Seamus Haugh.
Volunteers also helped in the kitchen, ensuring that everyone enjoyed a cuppa before heading home.
Special thanks to Stephen, the projectionist, from the Star Theatre who not only offered his services to show the Mayoral DVD but also helped with the moving of furniture.
Much is mentioned about the uniqueness of the former borough and it is the willingness of people such as these that typifies the spirit of Eaglehawk.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to them one and all.
Of the 25 surviving councillors of the Borough of Eaglehawk 19 were able to attend, as did two former town clerks and numerous staff members.
All enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce, sharing tales of their days at the borough.
