The Bendigo Cemeteries Trust will hold a meeting on March 14 to discuss why and how the building will be demolished, including what will happen to nearby memorials.

Bendigo Cemeteries Trust chief executive officer Graham Fountain slammed the “deplorable” act by the unknown perpetrators.

“I think it’s deplorable to think somebody will deliberately damage anything with fire, but even more so a cemetery because of the emotional aspects of it,” he said.

“People should respect that people’s loved ones are there, plus the historical and cultural significance cemeteries hold. It’s a low act.”

The building is currently fenced off because it is a risk to the public, but will be demolished soon after the public meeting. 

Mr Fountain said the 15  affected memorial plaques would still be accessible, while the building stood under restriction. 

 “We can’t leave it open because of the risk,” he said.

“Visiting memorials are an important part of the ongoing grieving process so we will make sure people can visit them.”

Mr Fountain said they would also discuss ideas for a replacement building at the meeting.

“At this stage we’re looking at some form of community or staff facilities,” he said.

“There’s no toilet block a Kangaroo Flat so maybe that’s something we can talk to the community about.”

The meeting will be held at 2.30pm on Thursday, March 14 at the Kangaroo Flat Community House.
